Using the Rule of Nines, this application quickly and accurately calculates the adult Total Body Surface Area (TBSA) for second and third degree burns, then indicates the suggested 24-hour Total Fluid Requirement (TFR) using the Parkland Formula:
24-hour suggested TRF volume = TBSA % x kg x 4 ml

Administer half the total fluid requirement (TFR), usually in Ringer’s Lactate, over the first 8 hours and the remaining half of the TFR over the next 16 hours.

The suggested total fluid requirements should be used as a starting point for a licensed healthcare provider to determine fluid resuscitation therapy and treatment.

Using this intuitive application is a two-step process:

1. Tap the percentage indicator adjacent to the respective body location to be added to the total body surface area (TBSA) displayed at the bottom of the screen.

2. Enter the patient’s weight in pounds or kilograms (selected by tapping the “lbs” or “kg” button). The application will automatically convert lb to kg for the calculations.

The application will then display three results:
* 24-hour suggested TFR volume (total fluid to be administered over the first 24 hours);
* 8-hour TFR and ml/hr (total fluid and administration rate over the first 8 hours); and
* 16-hour TFR and ml/hr (total fluid and administration rate over the next 16 hours).

Example: A patient with 50% TBSA burns, weighs 100 kg:
* 24-hour suggested TRF Volume = 20,000 ml;
* 8-hour TFR = 10,000 ml at 1,250 ml/hr; and
* 16-hour TFR = 10,000 ml at 625 ml/hr
